Urla
Urla lies at the centre of a number of important towns and villages, each with their own charm. Urla itself (formerly known as Klazomenai), was one of the twelve Ionian ports during ancient Greek times, just as Izmir, Foça and Efes.

Klazomenai was an important town due to the production of olive oil. Ancient olive presses have been found nearby and these are being incorporated into a museum. The oldest archaeological findings in the area date from the sixth century before Christ.

Izmir
Urla lies to the west of the city of Izmir, one of the principal cities of the Mediterranean. Izmir has a population of 3 million, making it the third largest city in Turkey. This is one of the most important commercial ports in the country and most of the marine transport for western Turkey goes through Izmir. It is also the location of most of the transport for Urla: the international airport, bus and train station and ferry terminal.

There is a lot for visitors to do, the shops, museums and sights all clamour for attention. Izmir, the birthplace of Homer, is known for her long history and there are many archaeological treasures to view in the museums and excavations in the city. The Kemeralti market, the promenade, the various mosques and the nightlife are sure to keep anyone entertained for a long time.
The marina is easily accessible and has good facilities for visitors.

Foça
Should you want to get away from the busy city of Izmir, Foça is one of the ideal places to go. Foça is directly to the north of Urla, across the Gulf of Izmir from the marina.

The town has existed since ancient times, originally founded as Focea in the Hellenic era. Today’s visitors will find a picturesque fishing village, still barely influenced by modern tourism. The harbour is flanked by various restaurants and shops, housed in traditional, red roofed buildings.

The harbour at Foça is well sheltered in bad weather and there is a good dock, however the visitors’ facilities are very limited.

Efes
Efes, known in ancient times as Ephesus, is located to the southeast of Urla and is easily reached by bus or car from Izmir. In ancient times the city was an important port, however movements in the seabed have long since left it land-locked.

The ancient city of Ephesus was one of the principal cities in the Greek and Roman empires. The city was the secret meeting place for Emperor Mark Anthony and Queen Cleopatra. Thanks to careful excavation, Ephesus is now largely accessible to the public and is one of the most interesting archaeological sites in Turkey.

Balikova
The town of Balikova (Erythrai in ancient times) is situated just to the northwest of Urla. The village was built on a natural sulphur spring and the Greeks were the first to draw on the rejuvenating power of the water.

The Agamemnon baths can still be used and the water reputedly lessens arthritis symptoms and kidney troubles.
