Turkey uses the Turkish Lira as currency.  The current exchange rate is around $1 to TL1,800,000 (£1 to 2,500,000).  An economic crisis in 2001 caused hyperinflation.  Inflation is now under control and Turkey is pushing through economic reforms so that it can become a member of the EU.  The advantage for visitors is that Turkey is extremely cheap.

Changing money can be done most easily at one of the many money exchanges in the towns and villages.  These offices appeared during the economic crisis to give people a more favourable exchange rate for foreign currency than was available at the banks, although presently banks also give reasonable exchange rates.  Many hotels also change money although they can have less favourable rates.
